Students Watch for Paranormal Activity in Wake of Lincoln Funeral Train

Urbana University

It’s that time of the year again! Abraham Lincoln’s Funeral train came through Urbana on April 29, 1865. It stopped at the Main Street station from 11 p.m.- 11:20 p.m. on its trek to Springfield, IL. There was no DST in 1865, so the time today is midnight to 12:20 a.m. Last year, a few of Urbana University students experienced paranormal activities along the tracks of the “train’s path.”

After last year’s event, Urbana University gained national attention. This year, besides students of Dr. Julieanne Phillips and History club members, James Willis, founder of Ghosts of Ohio will bring his tracking devices and Jim Hannah from the Associated Press will also be on hand. Breanne Parcels will feature a story on the event in this Saturdays’ Urbana Daily Citizen. Dr. Phillips has receieved inquiries from ghost followers around the country as well as the story being posted on similar websites.

The public is welcome to join the students! Set up will begin at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29 at the former site of the Main Street depot on North Main Street in Urbana. There is an abandoned service station there to park and side streets close by as well. The station was a bit west of the road. The plan is then to walk the path of the train from 12:20 a.m. to the Depot located on Miami Street. The restored caboose in the parking lot will be open for free tours.

The schedule is as follows:

8:00 p.m. James Willis and 10 of his associates will begin setting up their equipment and scope the area of the former Main Street Depot and the Scioto Street depot by the coffee shop. They will be happy to answer any questions you have and watch them set up. Jim Hannah, an AP journalist, and his photographer will also meet at that time with us.

10:00 p.m. Ken Davis, will begin his free tours of the restored caboose on the property of the coffee shop depot on Scioto Street. He and his associates will be on hand to answer questions about railroad history and hand out booklets on local history.

11:40 p.m.- 12:00 midnight- The time that the Lincoln Special arrived and stayed at the Main Street depot (located just west of US 68/North Main Street).

Midnight- We will then walk the train path on the bike trail to the Scioto Street coffee shop where students experienced paranormal activity last year.
